Connecting,

sharing, thriving

What we’re doing to keep our people engaged and included.

At Derwent London,
every employee matters

It may be a cliché but in a company like ours, our people really are our biggest asset. We believe that a responsible, sustainable business is one that works to remove barriers to good health, information, social inclusion and collaboration.

In 2022, we’ve been regularly sharing knowledge through monthly online presentations, workshops and via our intranet. We’ve continued to encourage employees to proactively pursue good health and wellbeing by providing awareness training and forums on a whole range of topics. We completed our unconscious bias training programme and continued to promote open discussion around diversity and inclusion. And on our autumn teambuilding awayday, we were able to recharge valuable connections and relationships across the company and focus on the importance and value of collaboration.

Our monthly online ‘town halls’ with Chief Executive Paul Williams continue to provide us with a practical and compelling way of keeping everyone at Derwent London fully up to speed with workplace and corporate matters.

People matter most:

Developing our employees

With the business growing rapidly in the last few years, our awaydays perform an important function. Alongside our investment in learning and development programmes, one-to-one coaching and training, our annual days out are a chance to reconnect, build new working relationships and share in some fun – sumo wrestling or dragon boat racing, anyone?

People matter most:

Developing our employees

Our 2022 awayday focused on our achievements, business strategy and priorities, and involved a series of fun events to promote cross-team collaboration. We were also joined by a guest speaker: Mark Pollock who ran a masterclass on collaboration to solve complex problems.
Earlier in the year, following our 2021 employee survey results, we convened a series of focus groups to examine our performance in four key areas. Diversity and inclusion, personal development, health and wellbeing, and agile working were all areas in which the Company had been rated highly in the survey, but which also offered opportunities to improve.

The focus groups, chaired by four Responsible Business Committee members, pooled ideas and recommendations for improvements, which were presented to the Executive Committee in May. These have led to many of the measures covered in our sections on Health & Wellbeing and Diversity & Inclusion below, and to encouraging scores in our October 2022 pulse survey.

Keeping well:

Health and wellbeing

We believe our people are most productive when they are physically and mentally thriving and socially connected. It’s in everyone’s interest that we, as an employer, do our utmost to help our people look after themselves, and proactively manage their health and wellbeing.

Making a difference:

Diversity and inclusion

Following achievement of the National Equality Standard in 2021, our Diversity & Inclusion Working Group has continued to engrain inclusive thinking into business activities across the board.

Making a difference:

Diversity and inclusion

Initiatives in 2022 ranged from disability awareness training, an inclusive leadership workshop for senior managers and the unconscious bias training provided by Chickenshed Theatre to screensavers highlighting themes such as Black History Month, menopause and religious festivals, which have encouraged discussion across the Company.

In the summer, we welcomed four young interns from the #10,000 Black Interns programme, which focuses on creating opportunities for underrepresented talent across British business. Our interns gained a positive taste of the property industry from their six-week placement, which included reverse mentoring with senior management and time with Faith Locken of award-winning Brixton-based community business, We Rise In.
